There are so many things we love about winter. It’s a great excuse to rug up in cosy knits and sip hot chocolates! However, the colder climate tends to be quite unforgiving. On your skin, that is! The chilly temps, wind and artificial heating can all leave you with dry, flaky skin. The good news is, you don’t have to break up with your glowing complexion this winter. By making a few simple changes to your skincare routine, you can have fresh, gorgeous skin all winter long. Here’s our simple, 5-step guide to winter-proofing your skin.
1. Exfoliate:
Exfoliation becomes even more important in the colder months, as the dead skin builds up more quickly. Not only will scrubbing your skin remove this layer, but it also stimulates cell growth and improves circulation. Hello, radiant skin! However, you’ll want to avoid over-exfoliating (just once or twice a week will do) or using anything too harsh. Oil based-exfoliators with natural scrub particles are great, as they’re nourishing and gentle on both your skin and the environment!
DIY tip: Don't fancy any exfoliation products out there? Soak raw oatmeal in milk or water for 10 minutes and use it to scrub your face. It can be messy but it will make your face calm, soft, and very smooth. You can even add honey to the mix for extra hydration!
2. Cleanse:
When it comes to choosing your winter-friendly cleanser, the gentler the better. Using anything too harsh can strip moisture off your skin, which makes your skin even drier! Choose one that doesn’t contain SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) or other sulfates, as these can be too abrasive. A good cleanser should be super gentle and contains nothing but natural goodies to clean, soothe and hydrate your beautiful face.
DIY tip: You can make your own oil cleanser by mixing 2 carrier oils of your choice with castor oil (1 part each). Remember to use a soft cloth soaked in lukewarm water to wipe the oils off your face.
3. Moisturise:
Like the perfect pair of boots, a serum and face oil are the perfect winter companions. They're best to use after cleansing or toning (when your face is slightly damp). Not on the face oil bandwagon yet? Check how it helps various skin conditions and makes your skin smooth with a lit-from-within glow. Then, like the cherry on top, finish it off with a hydrating cream like the Flower Face Cream.
DIY tip: Sweet almond, jojoba, avocado and macadamia oils are ideal for winter skin. Fancy making your own body oil? Why not blend those natural oils together? They help to protect your skin from dryness and make your skin soft and supple. Enjoy!
4. Mask:
Is there anything better than relaxing in a hot bath in winter? Yes — doing a gorgeous, hydrating face mask while you’re in the bath! You’re in luck, because our Smooth and Glow Exfoliator actually doubles as a face mask. Yep, like your favourite trench coat, it’s extremely versatile. Oh, and because your body needs a bit of love in winter too, why not add some bath soak to your bath? Not only will it leave you feeling silky smooth, the tantalising aroma will delight your senses.
5. Protect:
When it’s chilly outside, it’s all too easy to forget about sunscreen. But even in winter, it’s crucial to protect your skin from the sun. Not only does this help to reduce your risk of skin cancer, it also safeguards against premature ageing and pigmentation. For extra protection, go for a physical sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium oxide.
